Dorper Sheep

The Dorper sheep is a breed of "hair" sheep, meaning it sheds it's coat and therefore doesn't require shearing.  It is a raised primarily for meat.  The breed was developed in the 1930's in South Africa by crossing the Dorset Horn and Blackheaded Persian.

The Dorper is hardy and well-adapted to a variety of climatic and range conditions.  It is a strong and non-selective grazer.  Dorpers tolerate parasite burdens better than other breeds.

The Dorper has a long breeding season and is not seasonally limited.  Dorper ewes can be bred as early as 6 to 8 months of age, though waiting till 9-12 months to breed will yield better conception rates.  Dorper ewes frequently produce twins and occasionally triplets.

Dorper meat is known for it's succulent and fine texture, and is reputed to not have the "mutton taste"  that causes many Americans to avoid eating lamb.
